So overall, 2009 was a much better year from me than '08. It wasn't all good, of course, but I'm coming out of it with more happy memories than sad ones.
If I had to pick one moment from the past year as my personal highlight, it would have to be the night I showed Neil Gaiman my Endless Project and had him tell me that my drawings were wonderful and that I was very talented. I will never, ever ever forget that moment and what it meant to me. Whenever I start feeling insecure or discouraged, I'll remind myself that Neil freaking Gaiman told me, to my face, that my drawing of Death was "glorious." If only he could know what that meant to me.
All of Worldcon was awesome, of course. Matt and I made some very cool new friends and got to explore Montréal a bit. We talked about Jane's Addiction with Melissa Auf der Maur, got pointers on which etsy stores to buy steampunk jewellery from with Cory Doctorow, and Kyle Cassidy asked me to sign something for him (hee!). Shortly after we returned home, we discovered that John Scalzi had used one of Matt's photos from the Hugo Awards in his blog. We were surfing the high from that week for a very long time. :D
There were plenty of other memorable moments last year too, of course. In May we welcomed a new addition to our family, a beautiful and very sweet part-Siamese kitty we named Grendel Maceo Zdunich. He's fit in wonderfully with the rest of the kitties, and he and Odin have become very close. In the late summer/early autumn, Matt and I both worked at a Spirit Halloween store and met people who have come to feel like a second family to us. Many of them helped us celebrate our birthdays early in December with our very first (and sure not to be the last) Silly Hat Party. Matt and I don't usually tend to make friends easily, so it's strange to suddenly be surrounded by so many, but we're overwhelmingly grateful to have them in our lives and hope they'll stick around for a long time to come. : )
Live music, as usual, was a big part of our year. I finally got to see Veda Hille live, and she was well worth the wait. We saw Ani DiFranco at Bluesfest (awesome show, awful audience) and Sarah McLachlan perform on Parliament Hill on Canada Day. We were there to hear Yoav debut some of the songs from his upcoming album and introduce some of our friends to his music (and to the man himself). I can't pick a single best show of the year, though. It's a tie between Nine Inch Nails/Jane's Addiction/Street Sweeper Social Club and Skinny Puppy. Both were incredible and unforgettable, and I feel honoured to have been in the presence of such legends. Plus Perry Farrell smiled at me and Ogre screamed right in our faces and we got splattered with his fake blood and it was AMAZING. I love going to concerts. :D
I turned 30 this year, and Matt and I celebrated our sixth year together. Both of those numbers seem hard to believe and it makes me wonder where the time went. It definitely feels weird to be leaving my twenties behind, but aside from that I don't have much to say about it. I think as I get older I realize more and more how irrelevant age really is. As for me and Matt, the year definitely threw some challenges our way, but I think we learned a lot and came out stronger as a result. I think our seventh year will be a good one. : )
We've already got a few things planned for 2010, and I hope that it has lots of good things in store for us and all the people we care about. As usual, I haven't made any official resolutions, but I would like to make more of an effort to write in here more often (I said that last year too, ergh), and to get more reading done (sadly, I think my days of reading 200+ books in a year are over and that SUCKS). Aside from that, I think I'll just take life as it comes, and hope for the best.
